Zips for Haiti is a student organization on the University of Akron campus. Our purpose is to help the students of Institution Univers (IU) and the people of Ouanaminthe, Haiti through our fundraising efforts. Ultimately, we want to ensure that IU students receive the necessary education to one day help their school, city, and country grow.
The name Zips for Haiti stems from the University of Akron's mascot, Zippy the kangaroo. Students on Akron's campus often refer to themselves as Zips. Therefore, we chose to represent our organization as Zips that are working for the betterment of Haiti (Zips for Haiti).
One of our efforts is to establish a scholarship at the University of Akron with enough funds to allow a Haitian student to receive a college education in America. We are working closely with local Ohio organizations and businesses including COCINA , Great Harvest Bakery of Stow , and Christ Community Chapel of Hudson to assist with our community outreach.
